Here are the fans I have found to be genuinely quiet in real-world installations.

For bathroom wall mounting, the Almonard 150mm axial fan operates at approximately 38 dB. It uses a precision-balanced impeller and a copper motor with quality bearings. It is more expensive than mass-market brands but noticeably quieter.

The Havells VentilAir DX 150mm operates at approximately 40 to 42 dB. It is widely available, reasonably priced, and quiet enough for most bathrooms that are not directly attached to a bedroom.

For ducted false ceiling installations, the Almonard Ventomax inline centrifugal fan operates at approximately 35 dB at the room grille when installed with insulated ducting. The motor is isolated from the airstream and the fan unit can be mounted away from the room.

The Khaitan Silent inline duct fan is a value option for ducted installations. It operates at approximately 38 to 40 dB and costs significantly less than the Almonard.

Installation Tips for Noise Reduction

A quiet fan installed poorly becomes a noisy fan. Follow these installation practices to achieve the quietest possible operation.

Mount the fan on a solid, rigid surface. A fan mounted on a flexible wall or ceiling panel will amplify vibration like a drum. If the mounting surface is plasterboard or thin plywood, reinforce it with a plywood backing board.

Use vibration isolation. Place rubber grommets or washers between the fan housing and the mounting surface. For ducted fans, use flexible duct connectors between the fan and the rigid ductwork. These are short sections of fabric or rubber that prevent fan vibration from traveling down the duct.

Seal all gaps. Air leaking around the fan housing creates a whistling noise. Use silicone sealant or expanding foam to seal the gap between the fan housing and the wall opening. Make sure the exterior shutter seals tightly when closed.

Avoid sharp bends near the fan. If the fan is ducted, maintain a straight duct run of at least two to three duct diameters before any bend. A sharp elbow immediately at the fan outlet creates turbulence that generates significant noise.

Use insulated ducting for ducted installations. Insulated flexible ducting has a layer of fiberglass between the inner and outer liners. This absorbs both thermal energy and sound. Standard uninsulated flexible ducting transmits fan noise along its length.

Size the duct correctly. Undersized ducting increases air velocity, which increases noise. Follow the fan manufacturer's duct size recommendation. A 150mm fan typically requires 150mm or 6-inch ducting.

Ensure adequate makeup air. A fan that is starved for air creates a whistling noise at the door gap as air rushes in. The door gap should be 12 to 15 millimeters. If the gap is too small, the air velocity through it will be high and noisy.

Troubleshooting a Noisy Fan

If your existing fan is noisy, work through these checks before deciding to replace it.

Clean the blades. Accumulated dust and grease cause imbalance, which causes vibration and noise. A thorough cleaning often transforms a noisy fan into a quiet one.
