Step 1: Mark and Cut the Wall Hole

If the hole already exists from a previous fan, your first job is to check its condition. Look for cracks in the plaster around the hole. Check for signs of water ingress. Make sure the hole diameter matches your new fan. Most residential exhaust fans require a hole between 150mm and 230mm depending on the blade size.

If the existing hole is too small, it can sometimes be enlarged carefully with a chisel and hammer. If it is too large, you will need to fill the gap with mortar or use an adapter plate. A loose-fitting fan will rattle and leak air.

If you are having a new hole cut by a professional, be there when they do it. Specify the exact diameter needed for your fan model. The hole should slope slightly downward toward the outside. A drop of about 5 to 10 millimeters across the wall thickness is sufficient. This ensures any water that enters the vent drains outward, not inward.

The ideal height for the hole is as high on the wall as possible, within 6 to 12 inches of the ceiling. This captures the hot, humid air that rises and collects at ceiling level. Position the hole on the wall closest to the shower or moisture source, not on the wall opposite the door.

Mark the position with a pencil. Double-check your measurements. Use a spirit level to ensure the fan will sit straight. A crooked exhaust fan looks bad and the shutter may not close properly if the fan is tilted.

Step 2: Mount the Fan Housing

The fan housing is the outer frame or box that sits inside the wall hole and holds the fan assembly. Some fans come as a single unit where the housing and the motor assembly are integrated. Others have a separate mounting frame that goes in first.

If your fan has a separate mounting frame, insert it into the wall hole. It should fit snugly. Use wall plugs and screws to fix the frame to the wall. The frame must be level. Check with a spirit level before tightening the screws fully.

If there are gaps between the frame and the wall hole, fill them with mortar or expanding foam. Gaps allow air to leak back into the room, which reduces the fan's effectiveness. They also allow insects and dust to enter around the fan rather than through the filtered shutter.

Once the frame or housing is secure, fit the fan assembly into it. This usually involves sliding the fan unit into the frame and securing it with clips or screws. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific model.

The fan should sit flush against the wall on the inside. The front grille will cover the gap between the fan and the wall surface.

Step 3: Connect the Electrical Wiring

This is the most dangerous step. If you are not comfortable working with electrical wiring, stop here and call an electrician. It is not worth the risk.

If you are proceeding, the wiring setup depends on whether you are replacing an existing fan or wiring a new circuit. For a replacement, you are connecting the new fan to existing wiring that already has a switch.

Remove the electrical cover plate on the fan. You will see terminals for the live, neutral, and earth wires. In Indian wiring, live is usually red or brown, neutral is black or blue, and earth is green or bare copper. Do not rely on color alone. Use a tester to confirm which wire is which.

Connect the wires to the corresponding terminals. Live to L. Neutral to N. Earth to the earth terminal, which is often marked with a symbol of three horizontal lines and a vertical line.

Tighten the terminal screws firmly. A loose connection will cause sparking and overheating. Wrap the connections with electrical tape for additional insulation and strain relief.

Step 4: Install the Exterior Shutter

The exterior shutter, also called a backdraft damper or gravity flap, is mounted on the outside wall over the vent opening. It serves several purposes. It prevents rain from entering the vent. It stops insects, birds, and rodents from entering through the open hole. It prevents hot outside air from flowing in when the fan is off. It reduces outside noise transmission.

The shutter should have flaps that open outward when the fan pushes air through and fall closed by gravity when the fan stops. Some models have a spring-loaded mechanism for a tighter seal.

Position the shutter over the exterior opening. Mark the screw holes. Drill pilot holes for the screws. Apply a bead of silicone sealant around the edge of the shutter where it will contact the wall. This waterproofs the installation.

Screw the shutter in place. Do not overtighten the screws. You can crack the plastic shutter. The screws should be snug but not forced.

Apply additional silicone sealant around the top and sides of the shutter where it meets the wall. Leave the bottom edge unsealed. This allows any water that does get behind the shutter to drain out rather than being trapped.

Check that the flaps move freely. Push them open with your finger. They should swing smoothly and fall closed on their own.

Step 5: Test and Finish

With the wiring complete and the exterior shutter installed, you are ready to test.

First, do a visual inspection. Check that all screws are tight. Check that the electrical cover plate is secure. Check that the fan grille is properly attached.

Go to the circuit breaker and switch the power back on. Remove your safety note from the breaker box.

Go to the fan switch and turn it on. The fan should start immediately and run smoothly. Listen for any unusual noises. A smooth hum is normal. A rattling, grinding, or clicking sound indicates a problem. Switch off and check for loose screws, a misaligned grille, or debris in the fan housing.

Do the tissue test. Hold a single square of toilet paper or a tissue up to the running fan. The suction should hold it firmly against the grille. If the tissue does not stick or barely flutters, the fan is not moving enough air. Check that the exterior shutter is opening. Check that the door gap exists for makeup air.

Go outside and confirm that the shutter flaps are open while the fan is running. You should feel a steady stream of air being pushed out.

Switch the fan off. Go back outside and confirm the shutter flaps have closed.

If the fan has a timer, test it. Set the timer for five minutes, switch the fan on, then switch it off. The fan should continue running and stop after approximately five minutes.

If everything checks out, the installation is complete. Dispose of packaging and clean up any dust or debris.

When to Call a Professional

There are several situations where DIY installation is not the right choice. If you need a new wall core hole cut and you do not own a diamond core cutter and know how to use one, hire a professional.

If your installation requires running new electrical wiring from the distribution board, hire a licensed electrician. This is legally required in many jurisdictions and is genuinely dangerous work. If the fan is a ducted centrifugal model that requires installing flexible ducting through a false ceiling, hire a professional.
