 I always suggest going 20 to 30 percent higher because real-world conditions like dust buildup and slight duct resistance reduce performance over time.

Next, figure out your mounting situation. If you have an exterior wall where the fan can blow air straight outside, you need an axial fan. These are the standard square or round wall-mounted fans.

If your bathroom has a false ceiling and no exterior wall, you need a centrifugal duct fan that can push air through a pipe to the outside. This single decision makes or breaks the installation.

Then pick the right size. For bathrooms up to 70 square feet, a 150mm or 6-inch fan is usually enough. For larger bathrooms and most kitchens, a 230mm or 9-inch fan is needed.

But do not buy by blade size alone. Check the CFM rating on the box. Two different 9-inch fans can have very different airflow.

Choosing the right exhaust fan is not complicated once you know what to look for. It requires no technical background. Just a measuring tape, a few minutes of reading, and a clear understanding of where the fan will be installed. This guide walks you through the entire selection process step by step.

Step 1: Measure Your Room and Calculate Required CFM

The first thing you need is the square footage of the room. Take a measuring tape. Measure the length and width of the room in feet. Multiply them together. That is your square footage.

Axial fans are designed for direct mount applications with minimal duct resistance. The air moves in a straight line through the fan. They are excellent at moving large volumes of air when the exhaust path is short. They are affordable, easy to install, and widely available. Choose an axial fan if you are mounting directly on an exterior wall or in a window.

Centrifugal fans are designed for ducted applications with significant resistance. The air is pulled into the center of the impeller and flung out at a right angle. This builds enough pressure to push air through 10, 15, or even 20 feet of flexible duct pipe. Choose a centrifugal fan if you are mounting in a false ceiling and need to run a duct to the outside.

I have seen too many installations where a contractor installed a cheap axial wall fan inside a false ceiling with a long duct. The airflow at the grille was almost zero. The motor overheated and failed.

The homeowner paid twice. Once for the wrong fan. Once for the right fan plus the labor to redo the work. Do not make this mistake.

Step 4: Pick the Right Blade Size

Exhaust fans for Indian homes come in standard sizes. 100mm or 4 inches. 150mm or 6 inches. 200mm or 8 inches. 230mm or 9 inches. 300mm or 12 inches.

For most residential bathrooms, the 150mm or 6-inch size is correct. These fans typically deliver between 80 and 120 CFM, which covers bathrooms up to about 80 square feet.

For larger bathrooms, over 80 square feet, consider a 200mm or 230mm fan. These deliver 150 to 250 CFM.

For kitchens, the 230mm or 9-inch size is standard. These deliver 250 to 350 CFM depending on the motor speed and blade design.

The 100mm size is only suitable for very small powder rooms or store rooms under 30 square feet.

The 300mm size is generally for commercial applications or very large residential kitchens.

Do not buy based on blade size as your primary criteria. Blade size gives you a rough category. The CFM rating tells you the actual performance. Always check the CFM number on the box. If the box does not clearly state the CFM, look for a different brand.

A backdraft shutter or gravity flap is a one-way door on the exterior side of the fan. It opens outward when the fan pushes air out. It closes by gravity when the fan is off. A timer function lets the fan run for a set period after you switch it off. This is very useful in bathrooms where you want the fan to clear residual moisture after you leave. Timer switches can be purchased separately and wired to any fan.

The third mistake is forgetting about makeup air. A bathroom with a sealed door and no window will not ventilate properly even with the best exhaust fan. The fan needs replacement air to enter the room. A door undercut of 12 to 15 millimeters is essential.

The fourth mistake is skipping the exterior shutter. That hole in the wall is an open passage for insects, dust, and hot air. A simple gravity flap shutter closes when the fan is off and solves the problem.

The fifth mistake is poor electrical installation. An exhaust fan in a bathroom should be on its own switch, separate from the light. The switch should be located outside the bathroom if possible, or at least away from the wet area.
